question for the diesel mechanics

Have cockshutt 50 diesel standard bore. Replacement pistons are close to impossible to buy. One fellow has 60 over manufactured from another engine but not having oil ring below wrist pin and most likely not close in weight. The Cockshutt piston is two oil rings. This remanfactured piston is from a gasoline engine requiring a deep valve relief most not likely as strong and would require boring one cylinder too be bigger. As one can see balance problems are possible but not likely with the slower rpms. My thinking is thus my original piston is solid except for a small area of the top ring land broken out near the machined valve relief. Why not just leave the top compression ring out. Not a working tractor . Yes starting due to much lower compression is comprised, however it's only on one piston. I can get a 30 over piston from Phil H. He has only one.The cost is not so much an issue as availability. My one son who is a mechanical engineer can turn the piston down, however due to issues of re chucking an skirt flex it's not as simple as one would think.

Is this an Aluminum Piston? Post a picture and let me take a look at it.I probably can repair it.If I can fix it, send it to me and I will TIG weld it up and repair it and send it back to you.Won't cost you a dime but the shipping. I collect Cockshutts Too. I like to keep them running.

I have a MH 33 diesel that has the larger 3 11/16 gas pistons in it, no oil scraper below the pin. No oil use problem. Years ago neighbor re-bored a gas 50 to 3 13/16 and used MF 85 gas pistons from the early 223 four cylinder engine, it really ran nice. Not sure about what the wrist pin work was needed, if any..

Weldingman here are the pictures. I had not thought of building up the pistons if possible to build up the one with ring land chipped possibly the other two shown in pictures could be built up also.. I would not expect nor let this be done free. my phone is 612 699 zero zero one one thank you so much

a lot of work and cost to remove the block for one bore. wish some one close had the portable type of boring machine

some pictures are of 2 pistons where ring land is still intact but cut out cavity is partially gone . pictures with brown background is one where ring land is missing for abour an inch and one half.

there is only one 30 over piston available and I don't want the 60 over remand Chevrolet gas pistons with notch machined in and no lower oil ring

Wilson I think this would be an easy fix, if the aluminum is a good quality. We can slip a piece of copper in the groove and build it right up. The biggest thing with Aluminum is getting it very clean before welding. you really have nothing to loose by trying to weld it. I have repaired pistons before with great success, One was 24 in diameter out of an air compressor. If you will open your e-mail tab I will send you an E-mail giving you my ship to address and we can go from there.
