66 distributor

I have a 66 Oliver I'm restoring. I had it running fine. Drove it around the yard for a while and suddenly it began missing and backfiring. Black smoke would roll from the exhaust pipe and it would barely run. It back fired so hard it blew the rain cap off. Twice.
After putting a kit in the carb it was no better. Replaced points, plugs and condenser. No better.
I discovered if I tapped on the distributor with a wrench the engine would run smoothly bit as soon as I stopped tapping the engine would again barely run and eventually die.
I took the breaker plate out and sanded and wite brushed everything until it was shiny clean. Sanded the inside if the housing so the breaker plate would have good electrical contact with the housing. Removed the through stud and brushed and sanded everything for good contact. After reassembly the engine ran fine...for a few minutes. Now doing the same thing.
The bushings seem to be good as there is no side play in the shaft nor any vertical play.
I'm at my wits end. Rather than tap briskly with a 9 pound hammer does anyone have other suggestions to try?

Replaced points, plugs and condenser.

How about the cap? The one on my 1600 has cracked a couple of times and the first time it happened,I thought something internal in the engine was shot. Cam or some such thing. What was happening was that the spark was jumping and it would try to fire on one cylinder while it was coming up on compression. I wonder if when you tap on it,the shock is closing up the crack enough so it doesn't jump?

I shall replace the cap and see what happens. I looked it over closely inside and saw no carbon tracts or signs of arcing. No visible cracks anywhere to be seen. That doesn't mean it isn't cracked but just means I didn't find any. At this point I'm willing to try.
Strange that after cleaning and sanding all the parts inside it ran so much better for a short time. You'd think that the cap would have immediately caused trouble.
And the fact I drive it around the neighborhood last fall and it ran perfectly the entire time. And fired up immediately earlier this spring. And when it began running badly I was driving it across the yard and BANG, instant problems. No warning or anything.

Rotor was replaced at the same time even though the one in it was brand new from the tune up I did a couple years ago. It doesn't have 10 hours of running time on that tune up but I replaced everything regardless.

Does this distributor have a good ground between the breaker plate and the housing? Inspect it thoroughly to see if it does.
