1600 steering

There was a 1600 narrow front on an auction yesterday. I ran it to $1500,but a steering issue made me back off. I had talked to a friend Thursday who said that when he drove it hauling silage,he had to keep turning the steering wheel one way to keep it going straight down the road.
I got on it yesterday and tried it. It would turn right OK,then it would turn left back to center, but from center on,it was like the engine was shut off. I put it in gear, and when it was moving it would turn. The guy who bought it seemed to think it was just the O-rings on the piston. After a lot of thought,it doesn't really seem like it would be the hydra motor if it turned back left half way does it?
If it was the cylinder, why would it turn back to center? Not that it matters since I didn't buy it. Just trying to get my head around it.

I'd guess the steering motor but I'd of hit it a little more, parts yards in PA want anywhere from $1700 to $2000 for a good running diesel engine from a 1600 and 1650.

There was a 10% buyers penalty. The guy who got it gave $1600,but paid 1760. I'd have had to go 17 and that would mean 1870. IHredrules was there and was interested in it,so I told him to go ahead if he wanted it. The steering scared him off too.
I've got a gas 1600 here parted out that came off the same farm 6 years ago when he had his retirement sale. He passed away and this was his estate sale. I didn't need another pile of parts laying around. I'd have hated to part it anyway. He bought it new and parting a one owner tractor doesn't sit well with me.

That sounds quite similar to what our 1650 was doing.I rebuilt the cylinder..........didn't help......had to replace the hydramotor...now it works fine.

That was my big fear. The hydra motor was missing from the one I bought 6 years ago,so I don't have a spare. I'm afraid the guy who bought it might be in for an expensive disappointment. IHredrules and I might have dodged a bullet on this one.

Randy, it was nice meeting you there at the auction yesterday. Thanks for steering me away from that tractor. I have enough projects as it is, I certainly don't need another one that requires a large sum of money to get working right.

Wonder what the guy that bought it is going to do with it or thinks its worth fixing since you 2 didn't? Would have been right up my alley, I have a NOS steering motor that would have fit it got it from a exdealer when I was looking for one for a 1650 a few years ago he had 2 so I bought both.Gave $350 each don't know what they sell for these days

Great meeting you too. I'm sure we'll run in to each other a lot more now that I know who you are.

Who knows. He was an older guy,he might just live with it. I don't know how long it's been that way. He quit farming at least 7 years ago. I don't know how long before that,Roger helped him fill silo. When I asked his son about it,he said he drove it down and washed it and it "wasn't as bad as it used to be". Apparently they've been using it like that for years.
