1755 Steering Box Leak

Are you talking the steering cylinder or the control unit under the dash? If under the dash do you still have a Hydra-motor yet or is it a Charl-Lynn unit?

I think a kit for those is about $25. Has all the O-rings and quad rings you need. It's just a matter of getting them out. Take the hood sides off, take the cap off the top, loosen that big bolt,it'll get tight again. Keep turning,it acts as a puller to get the gear off the shaft. Then you can lift the whole cylinder up out of there.

I cracked the one on my 2-135 one time, but that one really leaked bad when that happened. If it's just a drip, most likely the quad ring in the bottom.

Got thinking, you might have to pull the radiator too. I took one out of a 2-105 and had to pull the radiator out. I put it back under my 1600 and didn't have to pull the radiator out of that one to swap it out.

Take the pipe plug out of the cap first. It lets air in so you can get the cap off. I replaced the quad ring and shaft in mine but didn't have to rebuild it. Check the other post here on 1550 steering gear. Note the timing marks on the piston rack and the pinion for reassembly.

Thanks guys - yeah it's dripping out the bottom, so I'm guessing it's the quad ring. From the looks of Mike's picture I'm hoping I can pull the radiator, open the top and pull the shaft out, and replace the ring

I had to take the radiator off on the 1550. The gear comes off leaving the shaft in. You have to drop the steering arm to take the shaft out. Easier to disconnect the lines, the whole gear lifts off. Clean the quad ring groove real good. I put a new one in mine and it leaked, had to do it over.

Just an FYI Mike. On the 1755,there isn't a plug. There's a hose. The tractors with closed center hydraulics use a bleed off hose on there.

They are. I put an Oliver green unit on my 2-135 a few years ago. Just instead of that plug, there's a fitting in there for a hose. There are so many subtle changes and differences in these things over the models and years, sometimes a person really has to stop and think hard about which one had what.

Thanks again
I was looking at the blow up in my manual last night, and it looks like the only way for fluid to get to the quad ring, would be for it to get past one of the O rings - I suppose I should replace them all while it's apart.
I'll order a kit today and let you know how I make out
Pete

Just a thought. While you have the steering cylinder out -- you may want to also consider replacing the needle bearing/seals on the pitman arm.
