Fender Repair Blues

These 00/50/55 series fenders are not fun to repair. Sure wish I had rust-free fenders.

The way they are designed moisture gets trapped inside the channels and just rots out the sheet metal around the mounting holes. My 1650 had a small garden growing at the bottom of the channels at the axle were soil had accumulated.

Seems the best I can do is cut open the channels to remove the rotted metal, clean up the surrounding rust and weld in new metal. Not possible to get the rust out of the entire channel pieces, so I am drilling vent holes at the top and then soak them with penetrating oil. That's my redneck repair solution. :)

There's a nice pair on CL here in Michigan too right now.
I got some spray stuff called Fluid Film. I've been spraying that up under the fenders of my pickup every time I wash it. Supposed to stop rust and prevent any more. You might try spraying some of that in those ribs.

Good tips, thanks. I had not seen the Fluid Film spray before. Wish I was closer to up north -- would probably buy a set in better shape. The Holy Land for Olivers.

Just a thought but there are a couple guys on the site who are
always selling parts tractors. Maybe worth contacting them to
see what they have. Just a thought.

Maibach's has been advertising pre-drilled plates on Ebay that allows the fenders to stand off from the axle mounting casting with the idea that the dirt and debris can fall out. I suppose you will have to use longer bolts with them. They look simple enough that a guy could very well make his own.
We have been making a point to pressure wash out the fender pockets in the spring and fall and spray diesel in there. They are hard to repair because the hat channels are not to be found. We used steel posts used for newspaper boxes to replace portions of the hat channels on two tractors we bought that had rusted out fenders and welded in new plate. After a little grinding followed up by sanding and body filler, they did not come out too bad. That experience got us to looking at our other tractors and start keeping the pockets cleaned out.

Have a neighbor wanting me to fix his on an 1850 he bought, told him it is better off just finding different ones.
