1850 muffler reinstall

Didn't think to look when I took it off and it may not have been install right to begin with...it has a heat shield, must be shielding something...which way does the shield face? Nothing really around it except the air intake, but it doesn't look like the shield would do it any good.

It goes toward the air intake. Keeps it from sucking in so much hot air from the muffler.

Or does it stop from melting the plastic on the plastic air cleaner.

Both I would think,but I'd still run it toward the intake even if it didn't have a pre cleaner.

mines just a tube with a cap less than a foot tall, (gas if that matters)...

Poor black an white pick on my pats manual does show it facing the intake. Google images show it that way too. I have heard of these tractors suffering vapor lock, makes me wonder if the fault wasn't the lack of a shield or it being placed wrong.
