Diesel 310 vs 283 Block Interchange?

1970-1655

Can a 283 block from a 1655 diesel be used as a replacement for a 1750 diesel 310 block? A neighbor has a 1750 with a cracked block and low hours on complete rebuild. We found a 283 block in very good condition and priced right.

Initial guess is yes you could make the 283 block work. Just curious, why/how did the 310 block crack when engine was recently rebuilt?

When the engine was rebuilt someone (different shop, not me) forgot to add antifreeze to the water. Winter comes and stuff happens. Rest of the engine parts look good, only the busted block.
