770 Seat Rebuild

I'm looking to rebuild the seat assembly on my Oliver 770. I'm having issues and am looking for advice or direction on the following items:

1) My main issue is removing the two u-shaped bars that have one end pass through the seat springs and the other end pass through a bracket that connects to the upright frame. I removed the pins on the frame side and that is loose, but the section of the bars that pass through the main steel bracket and the rubber seat springs won't budge. I don't see any additional hardware holding it in. I feel like I'm missing something, because any more force is going to permanently damage the parts.

2) I've disconnected the threaded rod that connects the seat springs. In an ideal world, should this allow the seat be loose and move freely? I can move the seat up and down, but only with significant force. I'm assuming that corrosion or tightness around the aforementioned u-bars is keeping it from moving.

3) Are there any good info resources for rebuilding the seat? I have the manuals, but they don't have much about the seat assembly. I've heard that Oliver Heritage has an article on rebuilding 770 seats, but searches turn up articles on the "Fleetline/Super Seat" and "Rebuilding your Ridemaster seat". I'm not sure what the Ridemaster is and if either of these articles will help.

Sorry for the long post, any help or direction is much appreciated.

Have you spent any money yet? You can buy the whole thing, minus the pan from Korves Oliver dot com. If you want to keep working at it,heat is about the only answer.

I've bought the rubber seat springs and the rubber stopper. That said, I can always return or sell those parts if needed.

Right now, I'm at the point where more force and heat will either work or permanently damage the parts. If there's no other way, I'll heat it up, beat the snot out of it, and see what happens. If I smash it to pieces and need to buy a new seat, my wallet will be sad, but I will get over it and buy it.

Before I do that though, I just want to make sure there's not some little trick others have figured out to make it easier or something that I'm missing (such as a hard to see clip or pin).

The Oliver Heritage article should apply to your 770 seat. If you can get a reprint or copy, it should give you an idea of what to do. Good Luck.

I've rebuilt a few seats where I tried everything and could not get the seat rubber off the u shaft. I cut the old u shaft off and bought a
new u shaft ($20-25) from Korves.

The site is telling me that private messaging is disabled, so I'm not sure of the best way to send it to you. I've updated my profile so the address should now show.

When you hit the end of the shaft with a hammer it just compresses rubber spring. You'll probably need to use a press to get them out. Once the rubber is fully compressed and some more pressure is on the shaft it will start moving.

I had one set that would not come apart so I cut the rubber off of the metal then used a grinder with a zip wheel and cut the metal off of the shaft.

Thanks

UPDATE

I heated it and beat the snot the out of with no success. My father and I then put it in his hydraulic press and were able to pop the bars out. The bushings were stuck on there pretty darn tight and didn't want to move.

The U-shaped piece of plate that the bars pass through got bent up a little bit as we couldn't get good support for both sides while pressing. That said, they're not too far off and we'll just bend them back when we reassemble.

Thanks to all for the help and advice!
