2-85 hyd issue ?

My friend has a white 2-85 that is having hydraulic issues. When running the haybine the hyd over heats and makes noise. It also seems to have low pressure at low rpms. Steerimg and brakes work good tho. There is also a pto issue that may or may not be related. The pto pulls good but won't stop completely unless you shut off the engine and restart it. So the question is does it sound like a pump or valve problem? Could the pto valve be leaking and causing the heating and drawing enough oil to cause low pressure at low rpms? I know nothing about these so any help as to where to start would be good. Thanks

The pto brake problem could just be a linkage adjustment. It may not be pulling the valve all the way into the brake position. But when the tractor is shut off the valve falls into the brake position which is what it is supposed to do to prevent starting it with the PTO in gear.

Jon, please let us know if you get it figured out. I'm always interested in hearing about how hydraulic problems are resolved. Thanks!

Well you guys, just for fun do you have some opinions using the clues that were posted? If so put them down it might be good to know how we all think. J.

Jon,there are three lines on the pump. Two big ones coming in and going out horizontally and a smaller one in the top. Get the oil up near what should be working temp, then take that small line off the top. Clamp a hose on the fitting, put the end in a bucket, start it up and run it about half throttle. It's been a while since I've checked one of those, but I think the limit for the leak off on that hose is a quart in 15 seconds isn't it guys? Or a gallon a minute? Any more than that, the pump probably needs to be rebuilt. My 135 would overheat the hydraulic oil after about an hour and a half of working it hard. I put a new pump on it and that fixed it. Mine would fill a 5 gallon pail in about 50 seconds.

I answered the PTO brake question upstairs.

Thanks! I saw your reply up stairs too. I'll have jeff un that check and see what happens.

Well I would say the pump is pumping fluid since it makes noise when it should be quiet. So pressure needs to checked to see if the setting on the compensator is incorrect. One of the customers we used to have when I worked for the Oliver dealer has 3 of the 2-85 tractors and we have had to adjust (shim) the relief valves on 2 of them. You are going to need at least a 3000 PSI gauge to do some checking.

Check/change the hyd filter
Check the 3pt adjustment to make sure it has freeplay at the top
Do what others said - adjust(shim) high pressure relief, then compensator
Check/clean the cooler and lines.
I had the same hydraulic problems on my 1755 when I first got it. Most of my problem was the filter and the high pressure relief set way too low.

Thanks for the info guys! When the weather is fit to work outside we weill try these suggestions.
