1855 Steering

Okay, so the steering on this 1855 I bought is screwy. I knew it steered funny when I brought it home, but it had a bend tie rod and a tie rod that was wore out. Anyhow....steering to the right...you turn the steering wheel...more than the wheels move. Steering to the left.....you turn the steering wheel...then hold it still...the front wheels continue to turn at a creep. I'm thinking it is the steering cylinder up front...seals gone and letting fluid past. Am I on the right track, or would it be in the steering motor?? Thanks.

Jack up the front end and see how much play you have in the linkage. There were some problems with the linkage in the steering linkages on wide front end tractors. Also do you know if you have the early steering unit yet or the later one?

Sorry I missed your call on Friday, John. Play is not excessive....about the same as my 1755's and 1850's. Not sure whether the steering motor is early or late. Tractor was built late 1974, not sure if that tells you anything or not.
