Hydra Power Drive Shake in high range

Hello folks, I have a 1550 diesel with the Hydra Power Drive. The H P Drive has just recently started to shake fairly severely when I put it into high range. Just wondering what is going on and what this shake is an indication of or what to come. Feels like it may be ready to let go. I have started to avoid using high range to avoid further damage. Low range seems normal so far.

Quite possibly the chain coupler in the driveshaft. I lost a couple of rollers out of mine a few years ago while I was raking hay and it shook so hard that the radiator started leaking before I got the field done.

My 1950T did that real bad when I first got it, especially in 5th an 6th gear. Found the chain coupler was out of alignment. Put a little more tension on the HPD jack bolt to bring it back in into alignment and gave the chain a good shot of oil and the problem went away.

Thanks rrlund, I took a look at the chain coupler and I am not missing any rollers but most all rollers on trany side are loose and easily rolled by finger and are very tight and unmovable on the H P DR side. Thinking may just order a new chain or in the mean time split and flip it so opposite sides of chain facing trany and HPD. See what happens?

Exactly 5th gear was where it was worst. Did feel it in lower gears high range though. Never tried 6th high. What exactly is or where is this HPD jack bolt? Thanks for the help.

I don't think the 1550 has the bolt through the bottom of the tub, mine didn't anyway. I added one to mine last time I had the engine out. I think it could be done with the engine in if you're careful. I think I drilled and tapped for a 1/2" bolt and used a jamb nut against the frame.

My 1800 did that in low, clutches were slipping, it was time for a rebuild. Bought a used unit from a 1750 but traded the tractor before I got it put in.

There's no jack bolt in mine. I have read here of drilling the tub for one. My question is how would one help since the engine is mounted at four points, leave the back two loose?

The HPD is attached to a plate (except for top 2 bolts) that can flex, causing it to sag, also allowing it to be adjusted back up with the jack bolt.

My 1550 nor 1600 neither one have it. The 1850 doesn't either for that matter. They all just have shims under the motor mounts.

Make sure you check the clutch pressure - mine did the same thing in direct under load. Send me an e-mail if you need the instructions on how to run this test. -C
