88 input shaft removal

I just purchased an 88 diesel. Thought the clutch was out but its the input shaft splines. What is involved in fixing this. I know the motor has to come out. Does the belt pully have to be removed? What else. Thanks Ed

Belt pulley gearbox doesn't have to come off. Take the cover off the PTO clutch, remove the three bolts from the bearing housing behind the clutch pack. You'll have to drive something in to knock it loose, then just pull it out and take your driveshaft coupler apart.

I had that happen also, the clutch would not disengage because it could no longer slide in the input shaft splines. The splines were the thickness of razor blades in front and full thickness in back so the clutch would get hung up where the splines went from thin to thick. I had to find a good used input shaft, I replaced the clutch and a few other things also since I was in there.

Never done it but been told you can pull bellhousing without pulling motor if you don't have belt pulley drive. With pulley drive, motor must be pulled but it really isn't that hard (I've done it in a couple hours, if you have hoist) and you don't need to pull belt pulley drive to pull motor.
