Scarcity of Olivers

I posted this on a few Facebook forums. Someone commented about need to preeerve Olivers. He claimed IH sold more of the Farmall model M than all Olivers combined. Does this sound credible?

No. Without checking the numbers,I'd think there were as many Oliver 70s as Farmall Ms,if not more.

That's probably pretty close to being correct. The 70 was the most produced Oliver tractor with I believe around 65,000 built of all variations. There were 270,000 Farmall M tractors built, and I don't think that includes the MD or MV versions, and there were around 18,000 MD tractors built. I always refer to the 70 and 77 as the Farmall H of the Oliver world, just as I do with a Model 42 Silver King. Even though there were only around 8,000 total Silver King tractors of all made, and no where near the same amount of 70 or 77 Olivers built as there were Farmall H OR M tractors, those were the most popular or most produced of each of those brands. I believe the JD A and B production numbers were right up there with the Farmall H and M tractors.

Let's not get carried away with what I said. Just off the cuff I said I didn't know the numbers on either one, just that they made a lot of 70s.

If I go by what my eyes see vs fact I could assume Big Bud made more tractors then White. I've only seen two 70s my entire life but lots of Ms even out here in wheat country.

the most produced Farmall was the H , the most produced Oliver was the 70 , but dont have numbers in front of me ,ive owned both & used them on the farm , i will say the Oliver 70 had more power then an Farmall H but no where near an M , i like Oliver tractors but the 70 was the most unliked tractor ive ever owned on the farm was not nice to run at all , it was the only tractor ive ever restored & sold because i hated running it , still have my Farmall H & M thow , but love my Oliver 77 big improvement from the 70

I know exactly what you mean. I've had one for 15 years or more. It's been sitting in the corner of the toolshed for five years or better. I just can't fall in love with that thing. I used it for a little bit of stationary PTO work when I first got it,but I never got motivated to even get a half azzed paint job on it.
