1655 voltage regulator

Replaced VR with 1119511 equivalent.Wired it per GM wiring instructions. For a minute it was working perfectly. Then I smelled wires burning saw smoke on regulator and immediately disconnected it. Is my new regulator fried? My old VR would work only if tractor is revved up to 2000 rpm. It was not wired the same way.

I wired the new one like this:

I don't understand why it won't work wired like in the link..Alternator is original.

Well the original regulator only required 2 wires as shown in the 1650 wiring diagram. Regulators using 4 wires were used on early 1550 models that did not have an Amp meter. Your 1655 is an early one as most 1655 tractors used the Delco with the internal regulator. You can check the alternator and the regulator on the tractor but I need to think a minute on the how to as I have not checked one in over 40 years.

"You can check the alternator and the regulator on the tractor but I need to think a minute...."

Hook a volt meter to the tractor battery. Disconnect the two-wire harness from the back of the alternator. Using a jumper wire, connect the "field" to the "battery" terminal on the alternator. If the voltage goes up at the battery (and a working alternator SHOULD be charging at full amps at this time and possibly make the engine grunt), the alternator is good.

I still have a little plastic jumper that when you unhook the plastic clip at the regulator you plug this in the clip and then see if it charges. It does the same thing.

Alternator is good. I can hook the key switch wire to the field terminal and it charges at 100%.
When the new regulator was working, it started at 100% and gradually went to about 50% when I smelled something hot and saw smoke coming from the regulator. That's when I pulled the wires from the regulator.
