im restoring an 1855 , have ran tractor very little since bought , any way decided to check gear oil today since its torn down for
painting , repair & restore , anyhow the gear oil seems way to thin ,dirty also. i know if the pump seal leaks it will put hyd. oil
into the gear box. since tractor cant be run at this point is there any way to know if that seal leaks , didnt seem to use much if
any hyd oil when it was used 2- years ago but i will say it leaked oil out axle seals when parked on a slope sideways , have removed
seals & they are packed with dirt ,so they'll get replaced. do you guys think this pump is my problem ? how hard is it to replace
that pump seal if i take pump off ? cant even say thats the problem , or if it was replaced at one time & never had oil change
since? or should i put a seal in there anyway at this point? is there any other way hyd. oil can get into gear box? ive been a
mechanic for 25 years so im not afraid to tear into any part of this tractor , but dont want to fix something thats no bad either.
Any ideas from the Oliver guys or advice?

If the hydraulic oil is going down and trans level is going up I would say it's a good chance it's the seal. I don't remember it being much of a job. Some mechanical means to lift hydraulic unit off is a necessity for me.

1855 has the pump on the side of the housing like the White 2-85 and up. You don't have to take the top of the rear end off. Three lines and 2 bolts. It's heavy though,so have a floor jack or something under it.

If I made a list out of possible causes, the pump seal would be last on the list since the pump is external. Most popular cause of the leak is the PTO.

is the pump the only way oil can get into the gear oil , never had the top cover off these tractors , so can it leak under the top anywhere?

thats what i was wondering , any other leak points . i know at one time the top & pto was open because its siliconed on

give me the top 3 on that list please , can i seperate each part of the hyds. & test it with air pressure to see if it leaks? how would you approach this problem with a none running tractor , there again it may have been fixed & no one ever changed oil , looking for so kind of test procidure ,, thank you all very much for the help

Like J. said most of the time it is the PTO piston seals. I would pull the PTO unit out of it and go clear through it and replace all the seals including the shaft and shifter seals. Does this tractor have the belt driven cooler pump on the left side of the engine? If it doesn't it is one of the last few built which it means it will have the cooler pump just inside of the main hyd. pump . Now I have seen the seal inside those leak into the rear end. When you have the PTO out you can look up inside and see the metal pan that separates the hyd. reservoir from the rear end. Dry it off and look for a crack in it.

this tractor has cooler pump on the engine , i do have PTO out & will check that oil pan , i posted an update on the PTO, which has some issues, please check out that post maybe you can help out at least it will update you with damage there , thanks for everyone's help
