88/S-88 question

Seems I remember reading somewhere that when Oliver introduced the S-88 they simply bored the 88 out a quarter inch and sent them out to the dealers, and they didn't start worth a crap, and Oliver had to send mechanics out to modify the heads? What did they do to the heads? Seems that the last short block Pop put in our 88 has a 3 3/4 bore, not 3 1/2. The head we have is from the original 88 motor. Which would explain why that motor never started for crap after the short block installation?

Don't know how the heads were modified , but my old girl has 9000 hrs on the meter and runs perfect . She 's a little hard starting if left awhile. I sold her to a good buddy last summer and he hayed with her . Now except the engine and drive line she's in a million piecese l.o.l. . I never new there was a pre-heater strip in the intake and when he gets it working hopefully she'll start easier .

Oh boy where do I start with this! To me you have some miss information! They did modify the early heads to increase the compression to aid in starting. There were also other design changes. When they got done with all the changes that to me became one of Oliver's better engines as it became the basic 1600 diesel engine. For Mr. black if that head is apart have intake seats installed and set the valve recession set to the correct setting. They were not right when they were new. If the head and I would need a casting number is the later head also install exhaust seats. You will think you put a different engine in the tractor. More questions? J.

I knew there was some kind of problem with the early S-88's not starting properly, and it was head related. Thanks for the info. At any rate we informed the machinist that we were dealing with a S-88 block and the head was an original 88 head. He said he would research it before he did anything with the head and act accordingly.

Thankyou for that valuable info. J . The head is not apart , but I will pass that info. to my buddy whom is the new owner . Some days I'm sorry that I sold her , but I didn't need her and have first option to buy her back . I also put my Minie M5 on the lawn for sale but she didn't sell yet .
