1650 PTO Seal

Hello,

Can the seal in a 1650 single speed 540 PTO be changed from the outside, without removing the whole PTO? It is shown as #30 on the diagram. I have an older 1650, so it was not installed from the factory as
it came before the design change where it was added. I installed the plastic cap and snap ring a couple years ago but never noticed that it also needed a seal.

Thanks

As there were no responses, I decided to try this and post so it might help someone down the line.

This can be done all from the outside.

Drain the oil out the rear drain. I did not drain the rest as the PTO doesn't sit at the bottom and I only needed to get the level below the output shaft.

The snap rings, shaft, and bearing come out, then remove the spanner nut. The same tool to take the spanner nut behind the PTO clutch on a Super 55 or 550 will work and Maple Springs Farms sells them. I unstaked the nut and put the tool on an impact wrench and it came right out.

If it's an early 1650, single speed 540, the seal will not be there. If there is one there, remove it.

Remove and replace the small o-ring under the spanner nut.

Take a socket just slightly smaller and drive the seal in place. It bottomed out in the housing.

Put the nut back on and stake. The nut will just clear the seal. Since I didn't take the whole thing apart, I didn't test torque to turn as the whole thing would be turning. I just guessed where it went. Suggestion would be to take a good picture or look real close at the number of threads and the slot where it is staked and try to put it back there. Put the inner snap ring back in, put a new o-ring in that goes around the outer bearing. Put the shaft and bearing back in and install the outside snap ring.

I refilled with oil and ran it a few minutes. I then let it sit overnight. Prior it would have leaked quite a bit and made a lake on the floor. After, there was no leakage on the floor.

The seal number is a SKF 23646. The o-ring under the spanner nut is a 031. The o-ring on the outside of the outer bearing is a 235.

Hope this helps someone down the line.
