On the 60's and the 70's and 66's 77's 88's the mufflers were under the hood if those are the ones you are asking about. John

Earlier models 18-28sand 28-44s (later 80s and 90s) were equipped with straight exhausts, but our '48 90 was fitted with a silencer when new. Described more as a spark arrestor than silencer in those days. Probably first fitted to industrials, im guessing.

The muffler under the hood inlet and outlet were staggered therefore most got a bigger oblonged hole cut in the hood so pipe could be ran straight up.
