I want to talk to you about the Cockshutt tractor that Perkins engines had as a test bed .

Hi Niel, its a long time ago now but heres the story. In the 1970s a large farmer here in Lincolnshire had in his tractor fleet a large Cockshutt trctor with a Perkins 6.354 engine fitted. I think as far as I can remember the model was a 570 or a 580 and it was fitted by Perkins and the farmer kept it after Perkins had finish testing it. Here in the UK all working tractors had to have a safety cab or frame fitted after 1977 so the Cockshutt was put under a shed and left. Severall people including myself tried to buy it without sucess then it turned up at a tractor rally owned by a relation of the farmer who nad it for many years. The next I herd he had sold it to a tractor dealer who brings in tractors from the USA and Canada so it coud be still here or with you lads your side of the pond. Must have been a 570 as there were only 3 580 tractors built and they had a 354 Perkins and two were torn. apart Andy Applefellow had the remaining 580 then he sold it to Machomas Arbaough
(sure the spelling is wrong) and then John Roop and a couple more owned it last I heard.There is at least 1 other 580 clone I've seen that was built from a 570.

Thank you Michael. I suspect it was a 560 which had the 4-270 engine from 59 on and the L4 in 58. Was it 4 or 6 cylinder? The elusive 580 was to use the 354 which in 1961 was in its infancy I think. Was there ever any pictures I wonder? Thanks so much for getting back to me.

I see you had already said it had the 354. I went on the Perkins web site and commented on a post on LinkedIn from a Perkins guy. I asked him to look and ask if there were pictures or info on t. Long shot, but we will see. Coincidentally I am working on a 61 560 with the 4-270 engine. I have all 4 of the 500 series. Neil
