Converting 60 to 12 volt

A friend has a 60 with a distributor that he wants to change over to 12 volt. What does he have to do with the ignition and distributer to protect them. Dick

You need to install a ballast resister like the O'Reilly's part number VR1 or replace the coil with a true 12 volt coil that says on it no external resister needed

Coil connections will need to be changed round if polarity is changed, but as Old - as you did not specify how you/he intend(s) to arrange for battery charging.

My preferred method is a 12 volt resistor coil, 12 volt regulator and having 12 volt field coils put in the generator. Although an alternator charges faster, I hate how they look on an old tractor that came with a generator and same for the external resistor. The way I do mine, you can only tell it's 12V when I push the starter button. You would also need to change all the light bulbs to 12V and put on a regular light switch if it still has the generator cutout instead of a regulator.
