1850 roller chain

My 1850 diesel makes a chain slapping noise when it is in the gears closest to the seat. When I checked the roller chain that connects the engine to the transmission it seemed to be a little slack. Can this be fixed by a new chain or am I in for a sprocket replacement? I know one cant tell without looking but I am just wondering what is usually the case. Thanks for any help,Lee.

I'd change the chain first Lee. I changed it on my 1550 and got away with it. On the 1850,a chain helped it until I had the motor out to replace the hub for the PTO drive, then I changed the sprockets while I had it apart. You can get those chains from any of the usual places,Maibach,Korves,Jerry Stair...

Must be you got the other issue fixed on the 1850?

Well..... Randy I think the chain was the other issue. A fellow I talked to when the noise first started had me convinced the noise was probably from the transmission. I finally got time to tinker with it yesterday and I am pretty sure it is the chain. I guess I will call Brad at Maibach and order one. How hard are they to change?

Nothing to it. You'll have to lay on your back under it. Put in in underdrive and neutral and the sprockets will roll free in one direction. Roll the chain around so it goes together at the bottom, put the connecting link through it. Make sure you use the long cotter pin that comes with it and goes through the holes in both pins to keep them from turning.

I would make him come down and do it, just to show you there is nothing to it! LOL Couple times for me it has been a bugger, but hey if Randy is willing to travel to put them on, take him up on his offer!

Ain't saying I won't,but it won't be until warmer weather. I owe Lee anyway for the Bar B Qu last summer.

That is the best idea I have heard in a long time! It would sure be worth another round of barbeque.lol That reminds me, I need to get off here and order it while I'm stopped for lunch.

A side note I called Maibach at lunch right after my previous post. I usually deal with Brad since I consider him a guru with Oliver [almost as good as Randy!] he wasn't available so a young lady took my order. Imagine my surprise when I told her [after asking for Brad] that I needed the roller chain for an 1850 and she rattled off the part number out of her head! I love this dealership! I have better luck with them than I do with the dealers that are still making tractors. I cant say enough good about them. I just wish they were closer to me.

Regarding those master links you've got coming from Maibach's. I had the link go on the 2-70 last summer, and I was out so I ordered three from Maibach's, since the 1850 and the 1655 use the same master link and chain. The links they sent me were not the ones with the long cottar pin that Randy referred to. They were of the type with two loose cross-pieces and four small cottar pins. I stuck one in the tractor because I had no choice and made it through the year. Been thinking lately I need to call around and find who has the proper links, with the cross-pieces made right into one sideplate, and the long cottar pin for the other side, and swap it next spring before busy season. Maybe you'll get the right ones, but that's not what Jane sent me last July.

Hopefully it is just the chain. Mine rattled too. Splines were worn on the input shaft of my 1750 thus making it necessary to replace. Big job....lot of work.
You'll know by sprocket condition when you take chain off.
