1946 Oliver HG 42 for ag or grading

I have an opportunity to purchase an 1946 oliver HG 42 that has been a barn queen for about 30 years. I thought I might be able to use it to do light brushing and grading. I read that it was primarily an AG crawler so what was done ith it? What impletments did it use? While the crawler has a PTO there apparently is no three point to lift, etc.

The machine is here : http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/grd/5908907309.html

Can someone educate me?

Thanks

The N Fords were about the only thing with 3 point in '46. They were used for drawn implements, mostly tillage. Not that handy for blade work unless they had an auxiliary transmission installed ahead of the main (usually a Ford Model A tranny), as they were geared too high.

If drawn implements, how did they move a tillage piece from place to place? What if you had to cross a road or ???Is this why they aren't used anymore and wheeled tractors took the market? Seems rather limited to me.Especially if they can't push dirt.

How can I tell if an auxiliary tranny is installed? Do you have a photo? It there an exterior gear shift besides the original?

Here are some photos. The kit that Oliver sold used a car three speed transmission from a Model A Ford.

Hi buffaloman, not being a smarty but your showing your age as fairly young, back in 1946 most tillage equipment has wheels be it steel or rubber and they had mechanical lifts to raise and lower them as posted only the Ford N models had 3 pts at that time.

seems like a lot of work to get the auxillary tranny installed plus you need a special bell housing and bent shifter besides the Model A transmission. I guess if the crawler doesn't have it already, you are stuck.

There neat little toys but where way under powered so the dozier blade set up while it works you will find your pushing the clutch down a lot or killing the engine.

I have an HG42 with an Oliver 60 engine in it and that makes for a good set up with enough power to spin the tracks. But the engine now has problems with coolant in the oil and have not got around to it. At one time I also had an OC-3 42 and it two has the same lack of power for the engine to do loader/dozier work.

They where made for just being a tractor with track instead of tires and are in the 20 or so HP range so a 2 bottom 12 plow or a 6 foot disk etc.
