Should I use any gasket sealer on the head gasket on a 1850 Oliver gas and if so what do you recommend?

Then ask them!? Look on the net? Any decent manufacturer will have details for installation somewhere. Sometimes you have to make some effort, for these instructions, as they do not necessarily fall into your lap from the sky! Suggestions are to try email, 'goggle', U-toob, snail mail, telephone, fax, catalogues. That should do for a start.

O. K. We used to put a thin bead of sealant on the right side of the gasket on both sides so that in time oil would not leak out from the push rod holes. The rest of the gasket we would install dry. Make sure you clean the head bolt holes as well as the bolts. Also use a good lube on the threads and a drop under the head of the bolts as well. Torque the bolts to the minimum torque values, then warm the engine up and retorque to the maximum value and reset the valves. More questions?

with the new sealers there are many options. If you understand J. Schwiebert's instructions the problem with older sealer was it hardened causing an uneven seal. I would do it as best I could keeping in mind the problems found over the years.

Are the gaskets still the same material? Many have been upgraded. If they are the same I'd do it just as J. S. described. If not as the gasket manufacture describes. I think the torque sequence is a little more detailed than he described though. :)

I also use sealer to make sure it stays in place while setting it.

Fluids used these day require different materials and vice versa. Keep that in mind.
