Oliver 60 voltage

I have a 1948 60 that has an alternator. I want to put a generator back on. I'm wondering what voltage it was originally? I assume 6v but have seen 12v generators on line.

One that old would have been 6 volt positive ground. Shoot most any thing back in the 40s would be 6 volts be it tractor car or truck

You did notice the word MOST didn't you??????????????????? As for diesels back in the 40s they where not very common and yes they could be 12 volts but if 12 volts most used multipal batteries

Thank you for the replies. Think I will stick a 6 v battery in it and see how it cranks. The wiring all needs cleaned up. I will have to decide if I want to put it back to original or fix what I have. The alternator mounts are cheesy and someone has put an idler pulley on it for a tensioner. Also has the wrong belts so one squeaks.
