need help with cockshutt 30

got this tractor for a while and always ad some wiring problem. for what i look into, it doesn't look right. anyway, this is what i got: my alternator is a 12 volts, look old, got only 2 wires( 1 for battery and one that goes into a black box(look like a 6 volts regulator box). there is also a wire going toward the point passing throw a ceramic white regulator bar, after going into a new 12volt (napa) coil and going into the distributor. pretty sure some component are not suppose to be there, also notice there is a 12 volts negative wiring system and positive system, witch one is the best to use. thank you
 
Alternators are used with a negative ground. Do you have a simple voltmeter? Also what brand of alternator do you have? Start there.
 
the alternator is so old i don't even know, let say i start whit a brand new delco, would it still be negative ground. only have a amp meter and don't think its working.
