1976 2-85 over/under fluid

I am going to change the over/under fluid and filter in my new to me 2-85. All my other Oliver tractors have ATF in the over/under or hydrapower systems. The 2-85 book calls for Boss Universal Fluid. Should it have ATF or hydraulic fluid in the over/under at this vintage?

thanks

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Dex/Merc ATF. I pulled the cooler off an early 2-105 a week ago Friday and that's what was in that. The service manager at an old Oliver/White dealer told me that they changed to a HyTran type oil in the "big tractors" later on because of bearing failure due to ATF being too thin.

That's what looks like is in it right now. But, I've seen plenty of posts that you can or should put type 55 in it. The book identifies type 55 for the hydraulic, but not for the over/under...

I changed my 1850 Hydra Power to the Hytran type because it had a leak and I always had oil around here, but not always ATF at a moments notice, but it didn't work worth a darned. I changed it back.

I did the same with a 1650. It has worked OK, but nothing really was gained from it. I thought about changing it back this fall, but I didn't. May next year. I was hoping it would help cure the little leak it had.

Basically for the o/u's produced from the 2- Whites on until the end of production, White specified universal fluid. In the mid 70's, oil technology advanced where the universal fluid had no problem meeting the demands of power shift transmissions. Prior to then, the only real readily available option was ATF.

We run Mobil 424 (a universal fluid) in all our o/u's and they just keep ticking. Plus, that way it's one less fluid to keep around.

I've got a 1755 and a 2-105. When I bought them the 1755 had ATF in it, and the 2-105 had universal fluid in it, so that's what I keep using.
They hold so little, that if they don't leak it's not a problem to keep both fluids around. It's amazing to me how much work those over/unders can do with so little fluid

Ya,and if you over fill them,it causes heat. The hot light came on for the one in my 2-135 this spring. I pulled the dipstick and it was overfull for some reason. I drew some out and the light never came on again.
I run universal hydraulic in my 79 2-105 and the 135,but I was likely to think the first 2-85s and 2-105s might have come out with ATF. I didn't get a manual with my 2-105 but I bought one later. It's dated April 1977. That one says "Use White Farm Equipment Company Type A Hydraulic Oil or Dexron". I guess it must have been up to the owners discretion at the time, unless Type A was ATF.
