Battery Drain 1750 Oliver

I have a 1750 Oliver Diesel that if I leave the battery cables on when not running it drains my battery. When running charges battery fine. No issues as long as I remove ground cable when not running. Any suggestions?

Need a wiring diagram if you don't already have one and a voltmeter. The connected battery ground is just completing the circuit -- there's a short somewhere. Might want to start where the battery feeds the amp meter (red wire?). Old light switch, ignition switch can be grounding out. Or maybe some suspicious 'farmer wiring' in there.

You have an electrical 'leak'. Only you can determine where it is - the rest of us can only guess. It could be a leaky rectifier if it has an alternater generator.

My 1550 had a 50 milliamp drain when I got it. The original alternator was changed to a Delco SI and the regulator was gone. The wires to the rectifier diodes were wrong. The jumper to the output stud was OK but the wire from the amp light that should go to the other terminal was also on the stud. Straightened that out and it worked fine.

Unhook the ground cable like you have been doing and put a volt meter between the cable and ground.   If you don't have a volt meter, put a 12 volt light bulb between the cable and ground.   You should have a lit bulb with current going through it.   Now unhook electrical components one at a time checking the lit bulb.   When the lit bulb goes out you have found the drain.

After the motor has cooled down, put your hand on the alternator, if it is warm, your alternator has a short in it

All the suggestions are good ones to consider. We have installed battery disconnects on all of our tractors including the backhoe and bobcat. A quick flip of the switch not only prevents any drains but also deters the little ones from trying the key when they are off. The biggest benefit that we found was a longer battery life. Every spring for the last 3 or 4 years, a comment has been made about how nice it is to have a tractor start right up. We also seem to have less problems with corrosion on the cables. Even the combine has disconnects. No need to worry about electrical fires happening either.
