1850 rear axle bearings

I'm getting ready to tear into the 1850 with the rear axle leaking oil and bearing replacement. I talked to Jerry at Ag Parts 1st about parts. Check my list and see if I'm forgetting anything. 2 bearings and races, axle seal, PTO gasket, o-ring for long shaft. I couldn't remember if there was 1 o-ring or 2 on the long shaft. Jerry sent me a copy from the parts book but it's very difficult to make it out. They show some shims, different thicknesses. It isn't apart yet, I don't know if I will need any shims or not, should I just get some anyway or wait to see what I have in there? Axle measures 3 1/8". tractor serial #191-621-428. Thanks, Chris

There is a felt in the outer bearing cap. At least on a 1750.

On that 1750 I didn't need any extra shims but your mileage may vary. It's possible with new bearings that it will return to what it was.

There's one oring on the pto shaft if it is the one I am thinking of that you dig out when you pull the shaft.

Unless your axle is loose, I would just change the seal. On my 1750 the felt held water long enough it rusted the seal just behind it and oil started leaking. So all I did was take the wheel off, take the outer bearing retainer off and change the seals. I did use a dial indicator before I took everything apart to make sure the bearings were tight though and it was good. Its been that way for probably 6 years now and still dry and still no play. I have everything to do the other side and plan on doing it the same way.
