im going to look at a 77 today to buy and everything is good except there is a piece of the rearend cast broke out towards the bottom on left side of tractor..guy says it still moves and operates fine but something got between housing and bull gear and broke it out....I understand lots of things could come loose but haven't seen lots of this with what I have been around..what if any inherent problems do these tractors have...what typically comes loose?...thanks for all responses

I have seen several tubs broken by ice, the rear end gets some water in it then freezes and breaks out the side just below the axle housing. possible for something to come loose and get between the bull gear and side of tub but I would guess that it would just lock up and not break out the housing. just my 3 cents.

Could have lost a bearing somewhere in there and run it under the bull gear. IH tractors like an M,400,450 and others were known for that happening if a bull pinion bearing went out. It'd drop under the bull gear and knock a chunk out. You'd think they'd be thicker, but they really aren't

FYI for you if it is not repairable, get a serial number. There were several housings over the years the 77 was manufactured.

An old guy on the milk route bought an M in Archbold one time. He backed it out of the toolshed one morning, started ahead and heard a clunk then left a huge stream of oil. Where the chunk of rear end housing laid, there was a piece of the PTO shaft. Apparently it had broken off and all they got out when they replaced it was the rear piece. The front piece must have laid up in there until something caused it to roll back and down under a bull gear.
