I have a 1650 with a pto that will not stop turning. I adjusted it so it should not turn with anytype of pressure on it but you cannot stop it with even a 2x4 against it. I took it apart and everything seems fine except for 2 driven steel plates have a small warp to them when you put a straight edge to them.
Is this my problem or could it be something else. Also how do I tell for sure which pto I have 540 or dual speed. It only has 4 of one plate and 5 of the other which would indicate a dual speed instead of 5 of one and 6 0f the other. Serial number indicates a late 1969 with a 3 speed transmission. i have both shafts (upper and lower) out but can't see how a dual speed would be driven. Not sure what to look for.
Any help would be appreciated.
My phone number is 507-475-0200 if anyone whats to call with advice.

I think all '69 1650s have the dual speed, which consists of a separate shaft for the 540 rpm and one for the 1000 rpm. The 1000 rpm shaft is longer and the splines fit into the pto further back than the 540 to mate to the 1000 rpm gearing. You switch speeds by changing the shafts. The shaft has a bearing pressed on to it, and you remove the shaft/bearing assembly by removing the snap ring holding the bearing. Then the shaft should pull right out.

Warped plates would be a problem. But if you haven't adjusted the pto lever pull yet, you should probably do that (IT manual section 217). Warped plates and the pto running all the time may indicate that someone set the adjuster ring too tight just to get the plates to lockup. If you backoff the adjustment so that the shaft stops spinning, but then your pto slips -- then I think you may need new plates.

The PTO no matter if single or dual speed was an option. We probably sold 50 1650 tractors only 2 were dual speed unit. Yes the warped plates will cause that problem> what do you use the PTO for?

Mark, This is a single speed 540 PTO off a 67 1650. I also have a 1000 PTO shaft from our 1950T that had dual speed PTO.

OK I know the difference between 1000 and 540 splines. When I took my clutch apart I only have 4 driven plates and 5 driving discs. The parts book shows 5 and 6 respectively unless it has a dual speed unit in it. I cannot find another set of splines inside to put a 1000 rpm shaft in it. Also I have a 1000 rpm shaft out of a 1755 and it is SHORTER than my 540 shaft???
Question is do replace the plates as 4 and 5 like was in there or did some one have this apart and not put enough discs back
in or is the parts book wrong.
I adjusted the lever and the collar to where it should not even drive but it does and won't stop.I have just purchased this tractor and hauled about 6 loads of manure. It stopped at first with manure in the spreader but got worse with each load.
CONFUSED as to what to do next.

Mr. Schwiebert I am glad you replied because I though you would prbably know how to figure this out.
I use this 1650 for manure spreader and feed mill. I have several others on the corn picker and stalk chopper and have had them for years with no problems. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Post an e-mail and or a phone number and I will try to help you. You probably don't have the 1000 RPM output gear in the unit.
