Did'nt want to hijack kevint's post.my 1650 starter is spinning pretty slow.if I rebuilt it with a kit would it turn fast enough for a somewhat tired diesel or should I buy a faster turning starter?where is a good place to get either one?i'm having to pull start it now

Depends on how much time you have to spend. Some people swear by these inexpensive gear reduction starters. I'm no expert, but my '67 1650 starter was full of rust and dirt and I wanted to keep the original starter vs. buying a chinese one. I got a kit w/brushes, etc. and thoroughly cleaned the inside and all the copper surfaces, magnets. It cranked like new and with a good group 31 battery that should be all you need. With the battery charged the motor will start fine over 50 degree temps outside. Under 50 degrees it needs the engine block heater or a little sniff of ether. But if you're engine has low compression you'll need to take of that.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong,, but I've put 2 12V batteries on 1555, 1600, 1650, 1655 All Diesel.. made a WORLD of difference in starting.. spins motor fast enough to fire like needed. Some of these have 6000+ hrs..

Go on ebay and buy one of the gear reduction starters that realelectric or emblodselectric sells for around $130 it'll start your 1650 better than the original starter ever did.I have one on both my
1550 gas and diesel tractors and my 1650 diesel. The 1650 was always a little hard to start the gear reduction starter spins it faster and it starts easier now.
