Oliver 1550 short wheelbase steering arms

Previous owner of this 1550 must have had a junk yard close by - I am finding many "non-original" parts on it. But, if you got hay down I suppose you do what you have to. Anyhow, today's challenge is identifying the steering arms. In the first photo, the one on the left has the correct 6" center-center distance. The other one is 5-1/2" center-center and is "flat". Parts book shows both left and right being "dropped". Parts book also says "part number cast on arm" but I can't find it, perhaps it's aftermarket? Question for you guys, how can I tell which arm I've got, so I can order the other side?

Look at your picture again! The part number is stamped on the arm It can be seen on the right one. It does not match either one of the two numbers on your parts list. Changing those arms on wide front end was popular to get them to turn shorter, but not so much on the "utility' or under-slung axles as they were known around here. I have not done this in a little over 40 years so I am going by memory but I also remember parts bulletins on changes in tie rods and front ends in general. We are in the middle of harvest so I do not have much time to check into it right now. J.

That's odd, I had a set back front axle for my 1650, and the steering arms didn't match. I didn't know which was right, maybe they aren't supposed to match. I sold it and bought a set forward front.

Would anybody that has a set-back front axle be willing to measure the arms and see if either left or right has a 1-5/8" drop?

My set back front axle is not all original but center steering arm has different height where tie rods attach. The picture is center steering arm. Just a thought as to why outside arms may be different.

I have a 1550 Utility and by the picture you can see the arms are bent down more than the regular arms for a regular wide front axel. They are bent down more because of the lower center tie rod connection to the steering center. The Utilities are harder to find part for because of the low production numbers and most of the time they got the regular wide front parts put on them when needed. I hope this helps you. Bandit
