77 diesel injection pump issues

FIL has an engine that is only firing on the front three cylinders, is this a common thing on an engine that has been setting. It runs on the three, so I'm going to look at it on Monday and change injectors or just look at it closer than he has. thanks chris

It is not the injection pump!. Take the exhaust manifold off and see if why smoke or if they "wet stack" out of those three ports. Take an injector out of one of the cylinders that does not fire and swap it with one from a cylinder that does fire. see if the miss stays with the injector or the cylinder. Take the valve cover off and see if you have any stuck valves and check the clearance on all of them.

Didn't think it was the injection pump, just wanted a little info. Planned on moving injectors and the valves have been checked. Won't get to work with it till Monday. The engine is out of the tractor on a stand, so no water and cant run long but might rig up a radiator to it to run and see how it runs once warm.

He started the engine on sunday when I stopped to get some info, the engine ran only on cylinders 4&5. This morning I made sure fuel was getting to all of the injectors and still ran on 4&5. So replaced the other injectors with others he had and got it to start and seemed to be hitting on all six. The fuel shutoff lever is hard to move and thinking its sticking in the closed position more than the running position. There is no response from the throttle lever on the pump. We figured it ran good enough to bolt in a tractor and be easier to work on instead of the floor. Once he gets the axle back in the 66 he might start on the engine install. Does an I&T manual show much on the injection pump? thanks chris
