I have a oliver 660 My brother thought it be good idea to put in 5w-30 in last winter .
thinnest oil I ever put in was 10w-30 . what it did is now I have oil everywhere
leaking from valve cover and head gasket. Have you ever heard of 5w-30 doing this to the gaskets ?
Im only guessing the 5w-30 might be more prone to do this .

In theory, the oil should act like 5W when cold and 30 weight
when hot. Unless it is synthetic, it shouldn't affect the
gaskets any more than 10W-30.

(quoted from post at 13:14:32 10/02/16) Is the crankcase pressurising? Valve cover gasket should not leak with any thickess oil.

Thanks for info . I wonder if he ran it with 5w30 in the summer would that cause the valve cover gasket and head gasket . And now that I looked even the oil pan gaskets leaking.
Never see this before. I will check if valve cover vent is plugged.
This great forum . I would almost put money on the clutch being oil soaked also. :(

Hopefully your main seals aren't leaking. If
I'm correct, the 660 was still before they
used the lip type seals. Those Spring loaded
cork main seals are very pricey for what
they are.

What's strange I have older Oliver's that never leaked
But they never had 5w30 in them either. So Im only guessing
It had something to do with 5w30 running in the summer.
It going to get parked for winter will have project to look forward to.

I have a 660 that I run 5-30 in all year. Never been a problem. Seems strange this all started with an oil change. No matter what you have for oil shouldn't effect the valve cover or oil pan. Nothing should be making the head gasket leak, unless it's oil running down from your valve cover and creeping along the head gasket.
