1550 engine swap ?

I am working on a diesel 1550. The engine block in this tractor is cracked and not repairable. I have a super 88 Diesel engine that I would like to put in this tractor. What besides the front cover needs to be swapped to do this? Thanks for any help

Better do some measuring. I think the 88 engine is an inch longer behind the rear motor mount isn't it? That'll make the 1550 PTO shaft an inch too long.

I assume you are wanting to use the Roosa Master injection pump from the 1550. The 88 engine is about 2 inches longer but will fit the 1550 frame. The long pto shaft could be the the main problem with the swap.

I have a 1650 engine that needs rebuilt or an 88 engine. John I was wanting to use the roosa master injection pump on the 88 motor.

Well as you know you will need a timing gear swap too plus the high pressure lines are not the same on the 1650 and the 1550. Does your 1550 have the single or dual speed PTO? If you have the single speed you will need a PTO shaft from a 1600 I think, if you have the dual speed unit you will need a PTO shaft from a 1650. Which flywheel are you going to use? I am going by memory but I think the tooth county on a Super 88 ring gear is different from a 1550 so the starter or starter drive gear will need to be changed as well. O. K., What is the problem with your 1550 block? Where is it cracked, in the bottom between the sleeves?

John the 1550 is single speed pto. The block on the 1550 is cracked all along the length of the block below the injectors. Maybe a 10 to 12 inch crack.

I didn't know Wichita flywheel I should use I have both just trying to figure out what engine will be the easier swap

I have installed an indirect injected 283 from a 1650 industrial into my 1555 and now it has a 1650 gas engine. The first time I dropped the diesel in without the hydra power to see if it would bolt in and bolt holes line right up. Then I had to get the flywheel and hydra power bolted on and dropped it in and then you have a problem as rrlund said about an inch too long! The first time I cut the input shaft off about an inch then you find out as John said the PTO shaft is too long! With the 265 gas engine the bolt holes for the engine mounts were re drilled in the frame then you don't have the PTO shaft problem. The input shaft had been replaced that I had cut so didn't want to cut it again. My only reason for installing the diesel was the industrial had a bad reverse o torc and the 1555 had a tired engine.

An FYI for you. A friend of mine traded in one of the N series Ford's that had been welded. The crack was about 75% the length of the block. He knew he could get more for the tractor if the weld was ground away and the block repaired better. I "pinned it" for him and had NO leaks . We ground the pins down and painted over it and it looked good. So send me a picture of the block. You can problem repair it in less time than doing the swap. John
