2-135 alternator possible fix

I like when people post what they found for issues for their problems as I might need to know it someday. after help from those on this board, I started unhooking electrical systems on the 2-135 last night in an attempt to isolate where I might have an issue burning up my alternators.
when I got to the lighting circuit and turned on the lights the fuse holder got hot to the point you could not touch it. took it out and hooked the wires together and seemed to work ok, no smoke out of the alternator.
still could be something downline possibly but at least I got a direction now.

If it was simply the fuse holder getting hot, unless it was upstream of the switch, it should have no effect until the lights were switched on, as it would not be live until the lights were switched on.

If the fuse holder was shorting to ground and upstream of the switch, that would rapidly exhaust your battery charge.

If the fuse holder was simply getting hot due to an unhealthy high resistance due to a poor connection, the power consumed when the lights were on would be somewhat reduced (some voltage would be across the fuse holder, so reducing the voltage across the lights - so the overall resistance would likely be higher, so less current in the circuit.

Sooo, is the alternator actually charging? It being dead is the likely reason for not getting hot now!

it is still working. I have not ruled out an issue with the lights yet. but for now I think I'm on the right path as to why it's getting hot.

Hey! Maybe you've put the cooling fan on the right way round? That might make the difference between burning out and lasting years?

I thought that too but no it's correct. last night it started charging 16 v so I unplugged it. guessing it smoked the regulator again from getting it hot testing different things. so, off I go today to get another. stinks but it's the only way I can see to test circuits on the tractor to find out what's using all the power.
