Seeding/forage question

My only connection with Oliver on this question is that I will be using one to harvest it, so I apologize. However, I need some good opinions on what to plant for a ten acre parcel of decent ground in northern wisconsin. This piece of ground is gonna be hay ground for the future, but I am wondering what kind of cover crop to plant that will give me the most tonnage for "hay" the fall after spring planting. Never enough drying time here to cut at boot stage, etc. So it will be round baled (not wrapped) when it is close to finished I suppose. Not interested in combining as I don't have one. Oats, ryegrass, rye, barley, wheat, peas and oats... Again, gonna be dry hay. What do you fellers suggest?

Are you feeding it or selling it's been a while I think I would pass on rye and wheat there harder to dry. If you're using it as a nurse crop the peas might choke it. That leaves oats and barley you might want to be protective of your hay and sacrifice a little hay yield and go for a short stem variety nothing worse than a flat weedy oat field and rainy weather. Maybe bump the question upstairs for more opinions.

Everyone will have an opinion I suppose, but I would recommend Italian Ryegrass. I would include it in your mix at about 8-12lbs per acre. It does a nice job choking out weeds, and is really the only option for a nurse or companion crop that can go for dry hay. It is also a biennial, so it will not die out until your first cutting of the second year. Therefor it will boost your yields the following year as well. As with all ryegrasses you will get a summer "slump" where there wont be much yield, but for what you are doing we have had great luck here in NY as an option. Last year I had a customer use it on 800 acres of seeding. First cutting yielded 7 tons. Feel free to email with any more questions.
