1650 front axle

I have a 1650 that had a narrow front and I am changing it to a wide front. I have it done, except how do I get the old steering shaft out of the steering motor so I can use the motor with the wide front? Everybody I have talked to tells me to take off the 2 bolt cover on the motor and there is a bolt to take out. There is a gear there that steers the tractor. Is there a bolt under the gear. If so how do you get the gear out? I don't know what to do. I have not been around Olivers much.

When you take the cap off you will notice a cap in the center of the gear on top. There is a groove in the cap. Pop if off and under there is a nut. It take a 1-1/8 inch socket. Loosen it, then it will get tight, keep turning as it will then break loose from the tapered shaft. This will free the gear from the shaft.

Thank you very much. I got it. I recently bought this tractor from a neighbor who bought it new. It has extremely low hours on it, but has been seriously abused. I don't think the front pedestal has ever been greased, the bearings were shot. So, I thought it would be a better tractor with a wide front. I also got an Oliver disc in the deal with 20 in. blades on and they are the original ones, so it has not had a lot of use.

When screwing that bolt make sure things move on that tapered splined shaft, because it the steering unit gear doesn't come loose it will ruin that bolt with the washer on it and snap ring ?? if you get to big a cheater pipe on your wrench. BTDT 1969, 1650 with setback wide front. This all based on my memory and its slipping.
