I am looking at a 550 1959 gas. Never owned an Oliver. Is there anything special to look for on this model? Any areas prone for problems ect. Thanks for any comments.

Make sure it is a 59 model as the engine size went from 144 to 155 cubic inch in 59. In other words, post the serial number!

In addition what Traditional Farmer said, just plain make sure the PTO works, engages and doesn't slip if you can. The PTO assembly is for the most part in the middle of the tractor, so if it needs repair, it needs a split usually. Not like the fleetlines that have the majority of the PTO components at the back of the machine where they are easy to get to

Thanks for the info. I will check the Serial #. Found the #s on Tractor Data. Where there any areas prone to cracking /breaking ? Maybe from a loader or other attachments? I am used to John Deeres and know what to look for--- I will check the PTO as best I can. Thanks

Front axle pivot wear, and steering box / rods, particularly if used as a loader with too much bucket. If it has a front pump check the coupler.

The 550 is a great little tractor. Included is a link to 550 Oliver purchaser's checklist, I did not write it, but it is helpful. Found on the left side of this site under Research and Info, Articles.

The 550 is a great little tractor. I found mine sitting in a weed patch beside an old barn. Got it running but it would only idle very slow. Ok, it would run so I bought it. Got it home, cleaned the fuel tank and carb, changed oil and filter, started it and , oh my God, I suspect the pistons were swapping holes as everything was so loose. Tore it down and was surprised to find the crankshaft bearings were in pretty good shape. All of the noise was piston slap, also all of that oil smoke was from the worn out cylinders. New pistons ,sleeves, and bearings from The Korves Brothers and a good used governor from Kent Gordon, she is up and running good. Next came new brake discs and PTO clutches. The 550 is a very economical tractor, I can mow with my six foot finish mower on less gas than my Husky zero turn. If fact it is easier on me to mow with the 550 because I can relax and not have to fight those levers.
I'm sure I have spent way more rebuilding this little Oliver than most "conservatives" would accept. But as Yogi said" if I had it all to do over again, I would do it all over again".
