570 Cockshutt fuel problem?

Helllo, I have a bit of a problem with my 570 diesel and I must admit I dont know diesels all that well. Im going to pull it over to the shop on this weekend and start poking into it a little better but I thought I would get some ideas before to think about.

Ive had this tractor for about a 15 years and its never given me one bit of trouble. Yesterday I went to start it to move some old bales (I hadnt run it for a few months). It fired right up, then the rpms jumped to 2000 and then it died. It would start up after that but the rpms still jumps up to 1600 +/- and dies. I can keep it running if I play with the throttle but the rpms jump and fall. Im thinking a fuel related problem (injection pump) or linkage spring broken on the throttle? Any guesses would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would check the tank for good flow and work from there change all fuel filters and the strainer and don't forget about the one under the hood. if it still does it probably time to take the pump off.

Thanks for the advice. I changed the first 2 filters as I had them handy and drained all of the fuel. I thought about it and it was 4 years old. Now it runs at 1000 rpms but dies if I drop the rpm lower. Maybe it needs to just burn all of the old fuel out. I did drain the third filter though. I will mess with it on sunday and let you know what happens. Thanks for the help.

If the fuel flow is all OK, then it sounds like the hydraulic head control unit is sticking. It MUST move freely for the governor to work right, if it sticks the governor overshoots the movement in both fuel off and fuel on directions. Just freed up one on a Case 600 doing the same thing.

I agree with Diesel Tech. My employer had a Super 88 with a mounted picker that had set. When he started it it would run one speed. Once he got the picker up in the air we removed the control unit and it was stuck. Freeded it up and all was fine.

Thanks everyone for the help. Ran the tractor for a couple of hours today moving bales and its purring like a kitten. I will pick up the third filter next week as I have never changed that one since I have owned it.
