Has anyone had any luck putting a different alternator in an Oliver 770? I found somewhere that said the alternator from a 60's chevy truck was the same-- just trying to save a few bucks..

If you have a 770 with a factory alternator you have a late 770. The factory alternator was the early Delco ( can't remember the Delco model) The later style alternator replaced that style you have. You can replace it but you will need to make a change in the wiring since your tractor has idiot lights instead of gauges. What is wrong with your present alternator?

It's a 65 Oliver. I don't think it's a delco alternator. The idiot light went off and the alternator is not working. Ithought it might be cheaper to replace than to fix but maybe I should try to fix it..

You could put a Delco 10SI (one wire)on the tractor that's what I put on my 770 and the idiot light works as it should.

Is this a factory installed alternator? Does it have an external regulator? Are there any numbers stamped in the alternator housing? It may just need brushes or a regulator.

Delco 10DN externally regulated. You should be able to find Delco Service Bulletin 1G-262 on the web. You can replace it with a 10SI internally regulated very easily BECAUSE you have an idiot light, not in spite of it.

An alternator charging problem could be as simple as a blown bulb. Not usual these days as most alternators have some residual magnetism. If that were the problem, it would be madness to change the alternator instead of replacing the bulb, I would think!

OK I'll try to fix the alternator. I haven't done it before but do carbs and starters so i guess I can figure it out-- thanks
