Oliver 1750 PTO Shaft Removal for Clutch Replacement

Hello All,

I've got a 1750 Oliver with a bad clutch in it. we've got the engine all ready to pull except for the PTO shaft. I was reading this thead:
http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=oliver&th=149003

but it doesn't seem to fit exactly what I'm seeing.

I removed the C-clip which allowed me to thread a bolt into the plug (not sure what else to call it) and pull that out. Then I got a longer bolt and was able to thread into the PTO shaft itself. Unfortunately I can only pull out about 7 inches. I can feel it pull out at the far end, and come out about 7 inches or so (didn't put a tape on it) and then engage into the next set of splines but it only moves about 1/4 inch before it stops.

OK, so here is where I'm not quite sure what to do. There is a set of splines that are flush with the back of the tractor, it looks like that bit is only a few inches long, does that need to come out. When I feel around in their with my finger, it seems that there is another c-clip or ring of some kind and that is what the PTO shaft is bumping into I'm pretty sure, but it has so way to be removed from inside the PTO shaft hole.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Eric

After you pulled that plug, did you take the rubber o-ring out? If not,get one from Agco. One from a common o-ring selection is too thin and will leak when you get it back together. That o-ring surrounds that plug and fills in the gaps in the splines. If you've pulled too far or too hard, you've already ruined it. I got in a hurry once while pulling one in the field and didn't take it out. It cut little spline grooves in the whole thing.
You'll just have to get in there with a 90 degree o-ring pick and pull yours out of the groove.

When you put the new one back in,just oil it up real good and roll it in with your finger. It's fairly simple in a 1750. It's right out there where you can get to it. On the 55 series and the Whites,it sits back in there farther and can be a real pain to get back in.

Shoot it never occurred to me that it was rubber. I just called my uncle to tell him and he talked to a local mechanic (Gary, guy can fix anything) and that is the same advice he told him.

Thank you very much, I'll have to get in there an pick it out.

Thanks again
Eric

I just had a similar experience with my 2-105 White which sounds very similar to the issues you have experienced regarding removing the O-Ring on your 1750. I removed the O-Ring on my white but the shaft would still not come out. I remembered I had read on here where someone suggested using an impact wrench to spin the shaft. I had a ready rod screwed into the end of the PTO drive shaft with a slide hammer on it and a double nut on the end. I tightened the two nuts together and put the impact on them as I put pressure on the slide hammer handle to help pull the shaft out. I only spun it a slight bit and it slid right out. Thought you might find this further bit of info helpful.
I was interested to read on here where that O-Ring is a special size and needs to be one from Agco to prevent leaks.

Best of luck with your project.

Also when you remove the shaft you will get it to come easy about a foot then you will begin mesh with the next set of clutches. Easiest way I have found is the thread all thread into shaft, double nut & rattle with impact lightly while pulling out. It will come right out given you have the O-ring removed.
