Recently inherited a couple of Oliver 77 tractors. One appears to have the original 6 volt starting/ignition system . The other one has a 12 volt battery with a push button starter switch , solenoid and ballast resistor . The wiring system is a rats nest. I tried turning it over using a 6 volt battery and nothing happens. It turns over very fast when a 12 volt battery is hooked up ( almost like the starter was a 6 volt starter ). The generator is non-functional at this time. The tractor does run. Is there any reason why I cant for the short term, eliminate the solenoid and ballast resistor and just use the push button starter switch connected from the battery to the starter button then to the starter eliminating the solenoid and for the ignition use an on/off switch between the battery and a 12 volt coil like an Echlin IC64? I have seen several posts lately about coils and resistors and frankly it seems a little confusing. thank you. Bill p.s. I'm posting this on the Tractor talk board too.
