Oliver ignition system

Recently inherited a couple of Oliver 77 tractors. One appears to have the original 6 volt starting/ignition system . The other one has a 12 volt battery with a push button starter switch , solenoid and ballast resistor . The wiring system is a rats nest. I tried turning it over using a 6 volt battery and nothing happens. It turns over very fast when a 12 volt battery is hooked up ( almost like the starter was a 6 volt starter ). The generator is non-functional at this time. The tractor does run. Is there any reason why I cant for the short term, eliminate the solenoid and ballast resistor and just use the push button starter switch connected from the battery to the starter button then to the starter eliminating the solenoid and for the ignition use an on/off switch between the battery and a 12 volt coil like an Echlin IC64? I have seen several posts lately about coils and resistors and frankly it seems a little confusing. thank you. Bill p.s. I'm posting this on the Tractor talk board too.

The original push button starter switch will handle the load.

Buy a coil rated for no ballast resistor. In my opinion it should have around or close to 4 ohms on the primary. I think 3 would be the minimum but from my observations I think 3 is a little low for 12 volts.

RT (my 2? but I know it will work)

thanks for the reply. I'm sure my Napa store will let me check the resistance . pretty good counter guys and owner. Bill

If you go to NAPA just ask for an IC14SB coil. Direct 12 volt, no external resistor required. It should measure about 3 ohms between + and - posts
