cockshutt 35 smokes but doesnt start

freshly rebuilt a cockshutt 35 engine, Hercules GO-198, and when i wind it over it makes smoke out of the exhaust and gives a little kick the odd time but wont start any thoughts? and just to
confirm the firing order is 1243?

1243 is the correct timing on your Herc. GO-198

is the distributor in correctly and not 180 out?

Not familiar with that engine but did you reinstall the throttle linkage as it was before?had the same problem with an old McCormick and we were off quite a few splines on the throttle linkage at the pump(diesel).

got it running it just needed a jumpstart for the first start now it will start off the starter, running a little rough though i think its sucking air from somewhere
