i took the whole assy off as the lower gear bearing was making lots of noise so i replaced it..cleaned the friction plates and reinstalled and hooked it to the brushog and it makes lots of noise still with some squealing as well..the bearing on the shaft seemed good but i did notice it was difficult to get back into the housing..i had to use the bolts to pull it in farther but it got real snug about 1/16 of an inch or so before the cast flange seated..there was no gasket on it and i thought perhaps that might be the reason for the gap but now im wondering if there is something else going on..it makes no noise at all untill its engaged and then it gets ugly..any thoughts?..i will probably pull it back out tomorrow and see what i did wrong and where the shiney spots are..thanks for any input

ok so i removed the shaft today and the front bearing fell apart...outside race seperated from inner and cage and ball bearings all out..some came out with the shaft but not all so some are probably at the bottom of the rearend...dont really know what caused it as bearings seemed ok when i spun them before installation..im thinking it might have not went in straight as i was using the bolts to push all of it in..this is with minimal effort (short open end wrench without much effort} but not sure..this drop housing was one i purchased to replace the one that was on there because of a bad bearing in it..this machine has really been used on the pto as it has most of the splines worn so i guess i will try to get new bearings for it..i have another pto shaft but the splines are really good and i read on here that they would wear fast with the drive hub being worn as well so reluctant to use it until i replace the drive hub at the same time..anyone have bearing numbers for the big and small roller bearings that support the back of the shaft..any easy removal or installation tips?..thanks again
