I am replacing the pistons and sleeves in my 6-354TL Dot 1 engine with an total overhaul kit.
In conversation with someone who has experience with these engines, he said that often the new rings didn't seat well in the sleeves provided. He advised doing a light honing before installing the pistons and rings to aid seating. He said that sometimes after the overhaul others had to open the engine up and hone the new sleeves and replace the new rings to get them to seat properly.
I didn't notice much of a cross hatch pattern on the new sleeves which I know is needed for good ring seating and oil control.
My understanding was that you don't need to hone new sleeves. Which is right; hone them or not? I don't want to not have them seat properly.

Depends on what you BOUGHT. Some manufacturers supply semi-finished sleeves (needs to hone), and some supply finished sleeves (don't hone). Check with the people you bought your kit from, they SHOULD be able to tell you.

Thank you Ian.

Makes sense and explains why some have a problem with rings seating while others may not.

Always appreciate the comments and advice on this form.

My brother and dad bought a new White 2-105 and it used oil from new. Dealer said that was normal. They sold it to a neighbor and he took it apart and honed the sleeves and put in new rings. That stopped the oil usage.

Again - experience is a great teacher but unforgiving. I will speak with the company I purchased the overhaul kit from to see if they recommend honing or not.

Apparently some sleeves are chrome plated with cast rings and others are just cast sleeves with chrome rings. The chromed sleeves can't be cross hatch honed. It would destroy the ultra smooth finish needed to protect ring wear.

Thinking back to my training - the cross hatch was to break in the rings AND to provide a cushion of oil for them to ride on during operation in a cast cylinder. I haven't much knowledge of a chromed cylinder wall and would wonder how it would retain that cushion of oil to prevent ware. Possibly chrome being very durable the rings would be what takes the wear over time. But due to low friction should last a long while.

As always thank you for your comments and experience on your brother and father's 2-105. Very interesting.
