880 steering

been doing some work on the steering on my 880 tricycle front. I found the front gear box out of oil. when I filled it it just leaked out over 2 days. Can I get away just filling it with grease or is that a bad idea? thanks in advance

If I remember correctly there is just an o-ring that seals that shaft on a 77 front end 880 maybe similar, I would be more apt to use something like corn head grease.
