Hello. I just bought my first tractor. It's a 1958/60 Cockshutt 550. I plan to put a front end loader on it and use it to lift heavy stuff at my blacksmith shop. I changed the oil, and fuel filters. I'm wanting to change the trans fluid and then the hydraulic fluid. I need to know what plugs are what on this. I've searched the internet and only found info on 1850 tractors.... so I will post some pics. Please identify these for me and any tips and info is greatly appreciated.[/img]

Trying to get pics up. Might have to use the computer at home tonight...

Hello. I am posting the pics. The tractor cleaned up real nice. I want to change out the trans fluid and go for a ride.
Im sure Ill be on here with more questions soon. Unfortunately I did not receive a manual, I will be purchasing repair manuals and such soon enough. Right now Im saving for a front end loader for this tractor. I have a brush hog, 8" back blade, two blade tiller, and a red rear dirt scoop. Also there is a small lever by my left foot, is that like the high/low selector for the trans?

Top is trans fill? The one under the pto is the level check or a drain???
the one plug on the side by the left foot well is for???

Here are the two drains underneath the tractor. Are they both for the trans/rear end? How do you drain the hydraulics? I would
like to change out that fluid as well.

And I assume this is to fill the hydralics, not sure how to drain them or check the fluid level... I see no dip stick but I have
not removed the plug yet either.

The top plug is for filling the PTO and also the transmission (because the does SLOWLY bleed through from tranny to PTO), but since you do not have a belt pulley installed then the transmission can be filled a lot faster by removing that pulley plate and pour in your 6.25 gallons of SAE 90 oil. The PTO takes another 1.25 gallons.
The plug under the PTO is a drain for the PTO and the one on the side of the tranny by the left foot is a level check for the transmission.

When you remove this plug there should be a small dipstick attached to it, and yes you can fill the hydraulics using this plug.

Yes this is a nice clean tractor.
In the second picture, if you look about 4 inches above your finger tip you'll see a hydraulic hose connecting into the reservoir. Well about 6 inches to the right of this is another entry into the reservoir and there should be a small plug there. Because it is in such an awkward location, I've installed a short piece of hydraulic hose in there with a cap on the end to make for easier draining.
Good luck with this new toy.

By pulley plate I assume you mean the plate over the pto shaft? That's the one seal that doesn't seem to be leaking but should I change that while I am in there? I'm going to be doing the left side brake shaft seal while I am doing the fluid change. I can see my axle seals are bad too.... how bad a job is it to change the inner and outer seals?

The belt pulley plate is on the side frame ahead of the brake pedals.

when you change your hydraulic fluid you may as well change the filter inside the round canister in your first pic. you can get it at napa you can also get your pinion seals (seals behind brakes) there.hydraulic drain is below 3pt. rockshaft right side from rear of tractor.it just a small plug.
