1850 brakes

Is there supposed to be a shim/gasket between the brake cover and housing? I took my right side brake assy apart because it wasn't working as well as the left side. Not much wrong in there other than dirt. I cleaned it up and reassembled it and the brake locked up tight. I loosened it up so there was no tension on the brakes at all (loosened the nut and lock nut) and it was still locked up tight. After taking it apart again I realized that someone had put washers between the shim/gasket and the housing. The brake seemed to work OK after installing the washers but the parts look up doesn't show the shim/gasket or the washers. With it assembled this way I can see daylight between the cover and housing. Any ideas why these items are there and why they are needed?

Imagine the kind of can do people who used to own and work on these machines, I've know several and attribute the things I've seen to them growing up during the depression, not a bad thing at all except when following them and trying to figure out what they did.

It's entirely possible you have parts that are from something else made to work, kind of. If the parts break down doesn't show the parts you have it's a good possibility they didn't start there.

My Uncle asked me to put the storms on the porch he built. As I was covering it up for the winter I noticed some paint peeling from the aluminum he wrapped it with. On closer inspection I saw what he did. He wrapped the whole thing in aluminum alright, aluminum beer cans. He cut up enough cans to wrap all the wood on the porch. Depression era man.

I think what your looking at is the same kind of thing. :) I dabble in the same spirit they had, I make things work, kind of. :)

My 550 now has washers under one of the brake covers. It also lets the dust out as the disc wear. My research was that covers and calipers had different part numbers for different years. Mine was a basket case so I had to use washers to get brake disc clearance.

If they weren't in the book did they come later because of the problem? I ask because I didn't think that time was as this time when things that aren't right are released with the idea that "we will address it when were forced to" instead of delaying the release until it was right.

I have read a few parts break downs, if there is a shim, it's listed unless the book came before the shim and the shim was added to solve an issue. Some shim kits require the assembler to choose which is best, but a desired dimension is given. Is there a measurement given that the shims are needed to achieve?
